NDP votes to give Justin Trudeau the Parliament he wants
Ottawa, ON – John Brassard, Conservative House Leader, and Luc Berthold, Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement after the NDP and Liberal members voted to pass Government Motion 11:
“Jagmeet Singh and the NDP have voted to give Justin Trudeau exactly what he wants: a Parliament that provides the Prime Minister with an audience, not an opposition.”
“Not only did the NDP vote to shut down debate on Government Motion 11, but NDP Members voted to take away opposition parties’ ability to scrutinize the government by allowing the government to disrupt the work of Parliamentary committees. In giving the Liberals the power to force the House to sit until midnight on any given day, several committee meetings will be cancelled.
“The NDP has also given the Liberals the power to adjourn the House and shut down Parliament until September if the Liberal government doesn’t like being held to account for the cost-of-living crisis, sky-high inflation, or any of Justin Trudeau’s many ethical scandals.
“While the NDP used to be a reliable voice against Liberal government overreach, their decision to vote with the Liberals has made it clear that Justin Trudeau has bought himself a majority government with billions of dollars in unaffordable NDP promises.
“Conservatives will continue to use every remaining tool at our disposal to hold the government to account and to stand up for Canadians left behind by Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh.”
