The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to immediately pass the Building Homes, Not Bureaucracy Act so cities like Victoriaville are rewarded for their homebuilding:
“After nine years of Trudeau, Quebecers are living through a housing hell. Home prices, mortgage payments, and downpayments have all doubled. In Montreal alone, rents have tripled.
“In Quebec, Trudeau’s own Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has reported that the province needs 860,000 additional housing units by 2030 just to restore affordability, equivalent to an average of 107,500 additional units every year. But under Trudeau, there were only 57,649 homes built in Quebec in 2022 – the last year for which data is available.
“Enough. Canadians shouldn’t have to live like this. Justin Trudeau must immediately pass my common sense Building Homes, Not Bureaucracy Act. This will build more homes fast by relying on a strict mathematical incentive to get Canadians the homes they need. We will stop giving dollars to gatekeepers who get in the way of homebuilding and ensure municipalities build 15% more houses every year while giving big bonuses to municipalities that exceed this number.
“If this formula were applied in Victoriaville, where housing completions increased by 38% in 2022 relative to 2021, the city would have been rewarded with an extra $842,183 for removing the gatekeepers and getting homes built fast. This would represent a 23% increase in federal infrastructure transfers that go to Victoriaville.
“Common Sense Conservatives will reward municipalities that deliver results like this, while cities across Canada who allow their gatekeepers to block homebuilding will have to pay a fine. It’s just common sense.
