How You Can Fight the Liberals' Gun Ban

100,000 Sign Petition Opposing Liberal Gun Ban

Dear Friends,

During the election, the Liberals promised to implement a wide-ranging gun control program if they formed government. Unfortunately, this seems to be one promise they will actually keep.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair announced that the Liberal’s gun control plan will be rolled out in a “multi-step process”, beginning with a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and including a buy-back program and a partial handgun ban.

The Conservative Party has long argued that targeting law-abiding firearms owners with arbitrary bans and further legal restrictions will do nothing to reduce crime. Criminals won’t register a gun, and they certainly won’t participate in a buy-back program.

The Liberals, on the other hand, have a plan that is not based on any evidence, but on fear-mongering.

Take their constant references to the AR-15. The AR-15 is currently classified as a restricted weapon, it has a common semi-automatic action, and it is rarely used in crimes in Canada. It is not a problem. Yet because it is a so-called “military-style” firearm, the Liberals have decided to ban it, proving that their plan has nothing to do with reducing crime.

The real problem in Canada is gang-related handgun violence, largely perpetrated with illegal weapons smuggled in from the United States. Police services have made clear that a handgun ban would do nothing to get illegal weapons off of the streets.

The Liberal government is, once again, going after legal firearms owners. Their plan is to allow cities to ban legal handguns, further proving that it’s not about reducing crime.

Unfortunately, the Liberals are able to make many of these changes without going before Parliament.

While they have to receive approval from Parliament for a buy-back program, they do not need that approval to ban individual firearms, like the AR-15. Instead, they will use what is called an Order in Council to change the classification of these firearms.

In response to this, my colleague Glen Motz sponsored a petition which has become the second-largest e-petition in Canadian history. As of the time of writing, over 100,000 Canadians have voiced their opposition to the Liberal’s ridiculous plan.

Meanwhile, our Conservative caucus will do everything we can to stand up for the rights of law-abiding firearms owners.

I hope this information has been of interest to you.

Sincerely,
